For those of you that don’t know, I’m a fairly big fan of Garmin VIVOactive HR. I got one from a friend and have been using it for the last couple of months, testing it out on a variety of activities. The Sport mode is great for tracking my runs, the smart notifications are super handy, and I use it every day when I’m out on runs. I’ve had a lot of fun using it, so I figured it would make a fun blog post.
Over the past few months I have been trying to take better care of my health. I’ve been walking most days and trying to stay active. I’ve tried to eat healthy and keep track of my sleep. I recently bought the Garmin vivofactive HR and wanted to share my thoughts on the watch.
Today I will be sharing my thoughts on the Garmin Vivoactive HR, a swim tracking and step tracking watch that has been on my list of “wants” for quite some time. As a previously owned Vivoactive HR owner, I was excited to pick up a new Vivoactive HR as soon as it was released. I already owned the Vivoactive HR and loved it, but was hoping that the new model would have additional features that would make it stand out and be worth the upgrade.
Here is my video on unpacking and setting up my Garmin Vivoactive HR. This best-selling fitness tracker is a four-in-one device: an activity tracker, a sleep tracker, a smartwatch with notifications, and a GPS device to track your runs, hikes, and trips. Please note that you need to download the free Garmin Connect app on your smartphone before you can set up the Garmin Vivoactive HR GPS smartwatch. You can also do the setup on your computer, but I find it easier to do it on my phone. In addition, the user interface of the Garmin Connect phone has been significantly improved and is now pleasant to use and beautiful to look at.
Garmin Vivoactive HR: Fitness tracker for competitive athletes
The Garmin Vivoactive HR is a bulky watch that can’t be mistaken for a fashion accessory. It’s clear what it is: a tracker for serious athletes. That’s why many people think fitness trackers like the Fitbit Charge 2 are meant for weekend warriors, while the Garmin Vivoactive HR is meant for serious, dedicated athletes who work out a lot every day. The advantages of the Garmin Vivoactive HR over the regular Fitbit include total water resistance and the ability to play more sports, including indoor swimming, snow sports, hiking, running, cycling and golf.
What sports can I record with the Garmin Vivoactive HR?
The full list of preset sports on my Garmin Vivoactive HR is as follows: Running, cycling, swimming in the pool, golf, hiking, rowing, SUP, skiing/boarding/XC skiing, indoor running, indoor cycling, indoor hiking, indoor rowing. You can also add new sports which you decide.
Garmin Vivoactive HR: Fast satellite recording and 24-hour heart rate monitoring
The Garmin Vivoactive HR has one of the most important must-haves for many competitive athletes: built-in GPS. It has both GPS and Glonass for ultra-fast signal reception. GPS and GLONASS are different satellite systems: GPS was developed in the United States and GLONASS in Russia. Glonass is the Russian GLOBAL NAVIGATION SITE SYSTEM. By connecting to the two major satellite systems, the Garmin Vivoactive HR can find satellites very quickly. If you choose to record a race, recording starts immediately if you have already recorded a GPS signal. Otherwise, the unit will search for a signal and you must press the right button to start recording when a signal is received. The good news is that this can happen in a matter of seconds. The Garmin Vivoactive HR has another must-have feature for many serious athletes: a built-in optical heart rate monitor. It tracks your heart rate 24/7 and provides a comprehensive overview of your activity and calories burned (except that it doesn’t measure your heart rate when you swim). The integrated heart rate monitor eliminates the need to wear a chest strap. Many athletes find them uncomfortable, and it’s impossible to record spontaneous runs. You have to plan to wear a chest strap – it doesn’t happen by accident! The Garmin Connect app has a superior user interface and gives you access to a wealth of information on your smartphone: truly comprehensive activity and calorie burn data, heart rate, steps taken, activities completed and sleep times. The Movement IQ feature on the Garmin Vivoactive HR can tell when you’re running or biking, even if you don’t say so. Of course you can also consult all your data and statistics via your browser at https://connect.garmin.com/. Again, the interface has been significantly improved and modernized, and is now pleasant to look at and user-friendly. One of the main attractions of the Garmin Vivoactive HR is the nice big color screen, which is easy to read even in direct sunlight. You can also turn on the backlight at any time by touching the screen. In general, you interact with the Garmin Vivoactive HR via the two buttons on the bottom and the responsive touchscreen. All of these athlete-friendly features make the Garmin Vivoactive HR watch popular with serious outdoor athletes and swimmers. On the other hand, this is a great watch, not a fashion statement, so it wouldn’t be a good choice for those who want a fashionable smartwatch that also discreetly tracks their weekend activities. For these purposes, it is best to choose a fitness tracker, for example. For example, the slim Fitbit Alta or the multifunctional Fitbit Charge 2. The photo below compares the size of the Garmin Vivoactive HR to the larger Apple Watch (42mm). The Apple watch seems bigger, but I find it smaller when I wear it, maybe because it’s thinner. The wrists shown here are small wrists. This photo shows the Garmin Vivoactive HR next to the 42mm Apple Watch (which is the larger of the two Apple Watch sizes). This should give you an idea of the size of the Garmin Vivoactive The Fitbit Charge HR and Fitbit Surge are pictured here with the Charge HR on the left. As you can see, the Fitbit Charge HR is much smaller than the other three fitness trackers. The Garmin Vivoactive HR also has the odd feature of being more visible outside than inside. So if you work out indoors, this may not be the best fitness tracker for you. On the other hand, if you’re into outdoor sports, want all your devices on your wrist (and don’t want to wear a chest strap and lug your phone around), have all your data available in an easy-to-use interface (Garmin Connect), and are a really serious athlete, you’ll probably discover what many others have already discovered: The Garmin Vivoactive HR is the best fitness tracker for you!

How do I turn on my Garmin Vivoactive HR watch?
The Vivoactive HR is Garmin’s newest watch, and it’s a big step up from the Vivoactive. The HR has a color display, whereas the Vivoactive has a monochrome one. The HR also has a built-in heart rate monitor, whereas the Vivoactive doesn’t. The HR’s software is also more advanced than the Vivoactive, and it has the more advanced features. I was so excited to get my hands on the new Garmin Vivoactive HR! I love the Pulse and am extremely happy with it, but I wanted to try out the new charging band that the Vivoactive HR comes with. There are so many options out there so I was a little confused which one to get. I knew it was supposed to be a better fitness tracker so maybe it would have a better battery life.
